The Role of Sport in Encouraging Teamwork
What a recreational game can teach us about cooperation.
Team sports rarely reward the player who tries to do everything alone. Whether it is floorball, basketball or a relay race, success depends on passing, positioning and paying attention to others.
In recreational sport these lessons appear without anyone needing to teach them. Players learn to communicate quickly, to trust a teammate, and to recover together after a mistake.
Fair play is just as important. Respecting opponents, accepting a referee's decision and shaking hands after a hard game are habits that carry well beyond the hall.
Most importantly, recreational sport is meant to be enjoyed. When the pressure to win is lower, there is more room for everyone to take part, improve and feel part of the team.
