Responsible Volunteering in Local Communities

Good volunteering is fair to volunteers and to the people they serve.

Volunteering is a generous act, and it deserves to be organised responsibly. Volunteers should know what is expected, who to ask for help, and how their personal information will be handled.

Clear roles protect everyone. They help volunteers feel confident, and they ensure that activities involving the public are safe and well coordinated.

Responsible organisations also respect volunteers' time. Tasks should be meaningful, reasonable in scope and flexible where possible.

Finally, volunteering should be enjoyable. When people feel appreciated and part of a team, they are far more likely to return.
